Evelyn Stevens, America’s Next Great Female Cyclist - WSJ.com

Evelyn Stevens, America’s Next Great Female Cyclist - WSJ.com:
"With less than a year on the bike, Ms. Stevens could put out 310 watts of power for five minutes when she was tested by Mr. Koschara this past spring. Most women at her weight of 120-pounds can put out only about 220 watts, he says, while the elite professionals can produce around 350.

Her light weight and high power output allow her to climb uphill faster than anyone she’s faced so far. “That is what makes her the star she is,” says Mr. Koschar"

New law means Colorado cyclists get more room | road.cc | The website for pedal powered people: Road cycling, commuting, leisure cycling and racing

New law means Colorado cyclists get more room | road.cc | The website for pedal powered people: Road cycling, commuting, leisure cycling and racing:
"A Colorado law recently signed by Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter not only requires motorists to give riders at least a 3-foot-wide berth, it also makes it illegal to throw things at riders.

The bill also means cyclists will be able to ride closer to the centre of the road when riding on the shoulder is too dangerous and ride two abreast when there is no traffic behind them. The law also makes it legal for drivers to cross a double yellow line - when safe - to pass cyclists.

The Colorado law is similar to several passed or considered this year in Lousiana, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Texas."

Rick Reilly - Lance Armstrong loosens up - ESPN

Rick Reilly - Lance Armstrong loosens up - ESPN:
"The world is starting to wake up to the fact that the Ancient Pedaler is actually going to be a cog in the Tour de France over the next three weeks. It boggles even Armstrong's mind.

'People didn't expect this,' Armstrong says. 'They're all like, 'Ah, the guy cheated his way to the top.' But now? Nearly 38 years old? Out of cycling for four years? Tested more than anybody on the planet? Right in it for the yellow jersey? There can't be a shadow of a doubt left now.'

Oh, trust me.

But hearts are melting toward the old guy, even French ones"

Mice Run Faster On High-grade Oil

Wow! I guess we better watch what we eat!

Mice Run Faster On High-grade Oil:
"...research, to be presented on the 29th of June 2009 at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Meeting, has shown that mice fed for two weeks on a diet high in sunflower oil, which contains n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, ran on average 0.19m/s faster than mice fed a diet rich in linseed oil, which is high in n-3 fatty acids.

This means that, over a 2 second sprint, a mouse fed on a high n-6 fatty acid diet would have a 0.4m advantage. This represents a 6.3% improvement which equals that achieved in the 100m world records over more than 75 years"

So important that I cross-posted it on ParkandShop, RandomTopics2 and OleanCyclingClub's blog

Cozy Beehive: Alma 100 resport from Ron...

Good report!

Cozy Beehive: Alma 100:
"On Father's Day I decided to go out to put some long miles in rural country. This adventure included one of my favorite spots to climb. Known as Alma Hill Road, in Alma NY, it happens to be the highest point in Western New York at 760m above sea level. At 4 miles and 1000 feet of climbing on dirty, grainy, rain washed road at an average of 5-6% gradient (steepest around 12%), it will quickly tell you whether you are in climbing shape, or if you aren't, readily provide a poorly done road before you to blame and vent your frustration onto."

Thurs and Sat ride

From Jo Ann

Just a reminder that there is a group ride leaving from Lincoln Park in Olean today at 6 pm. Route is approximately 30 miles--give or take.

Saturday morning in the Interfaith Caregivers rider leaving from the Allegany River Park. The 100k ride leaves at 8:30 with registration starting at 8 am. Don't be late or you'll miss the "Bo Train". It's my understanding that it is the same route as last year. The shorter rider leave at time increments after that. If anyone wants to wimp on down with me, I'll be doing the 50k ride this year.

See you tonight and Saturday!!!!

Lance Armstrong out of Giro contention, but old fire is returning - Austin Murphy - SI.com:
"...when he isn't fetching bottles for his mates, Lance Armstrong is beginning to show flashes of his old, predatory form. While he's won no Giro stages and is still not yet his former self, he's getting close enough to be making people nervous -- including, I am guessing, his Astana teammate Alberto Contador."

Cozy Beehive:
"Every cyclist can be a chemist. And a dangerously accidental one at that. Even if you flunked high school chemistry.

Did you ever have that time when you threw a water bottle into the kitchen sink, without emptying that tad bit of fancy powdered drink you made eons ago?"

BonaResponds has build some new trails to the South and West of Campus. Not super far but when you add them to the trails through Bob's Woods BonaResponds helped make last year and the trail system is pretty nice!

Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees

Part Behavioral finance, part cycling, and part a study in how the brain works, the following "Test" is eye opening at least.

We all get so caught up in seeing what we want to see that we sometimes miss the obvious. This effects us in many ways: In finance, if bullish (optimistic), we are more apt to see the good news, if bearish (pessimistic) you see only bad news.

That is one reason why big break throughs happen from those outside the field. It is one reason why sabbaticals and vacations are important. But it can also have important implications in many other ways.

Go ahead, take the test. It takes about a minute.

Bless the Cyclist, on Your Left! - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

Bless the Cyclist, on Your Left! - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com:
"...more than 100 cyclists to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine on Saturday morning for the Blessing of the Bikes, an event now in its 11th year.

The crowd — a conscientious-looking collection of helmeted riders and bikes with bells, reflectors and review mirrors — gathered in front of the Upper West Side cathedral and would soon enter to be sprinkled with Holy Water as a shield against the dangers of urban cycling."

Denver Cycling Examiner: Bonking (think Alberto Contador not Austin Powers)

Good article:

Denver Cycling Examiner: Bonking (think Alberto Contador not Austin Powers):
"Even uber-champion Lance Armstrong has had bonking experiences, mostly insignificant, but in one well-remembered instance in 2003, he blamed lack of adequate hydration on his less than stellar performance during the stage 12 time trial which he lost to Jan Ullrich by more than one and a half minutes. Dehydration is not the same thing as low blood sugar, but they are both considered to be a form of bonking.

What this all means to us recreational cyclists is this: if inadequate food and water can slow the world’s greatest cyclists to a crawl, that same condition can ruin our much more modest endeavors just as easily. There are clear differences amongst low blood sugar, dehydration and another condition known as hyponatremia. But every cyclist should have a basic understanding of each so symptoms can be recognized and dealt with quickly."

www.cyclingnews.com - the world centre of cycling:
"Earlier this week, Armstrong responded to news that the AFLD had raised objections to the incident. He issued a statement saying that he and team manager Johan Bruyneel were attempting to verify the validity of the person requesting the samples and Armstrong was permitted to leave.

'We told the tester we wanted to check with the UCI to confirm who he was and to make sure he wasn't just some French guy with a backpack and some equipment to take my blood and urine.

'Johan stayed with him and in his presence called the UCI to find out what was going on. We asked if it was OK for me to run inside and shower while they made their calls and the tester said that was fine.'"

Olympic cycling suits will have to be burnt - Times Online

Olympic cycling suits will have to be burnt - Times Online: "
All but a few of the scientifically pioneered racesuits worn by Sir Chris Hoy and his fellow cyclists in the Beijing Olympics last year will soon be incinerated. The suits were the product of a four-year programme of design and development that used input from Formula One technology. The value of the suit - or rather the risk of foreign competitors getting their hands on one and learning from the design - is such that these suits can never be seen again.

They are now back in storage at British Cycling's headquarters in Manchester. A few will be retained for testing purposes and when storage space runs out, the others will be destroyed"
